I'm told I was born in Philadelphia but, of course, that's hearsay. What I
know for sure is two decades later I was a beach artist at nearby Atlantic
City and learning how to draw at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art. Upon
graduating, I was drafted, saw Great Britain, France, Belgium, Luxemburg, and
Germany. All that time I was sending cartoon ideas to The New Yorker
magazine. When the war was over, I married, got divorced, and joined The New
Yorker staff. My cartoons appeared in the magazine from 1945 to 1995. I wrote
and illustrated children s books, tried Off-Broadway acting, and did a bit
part in a Woody Allen movie. I paint and make sketches everywhere I go.
Drawing funny pictures for a living is as good as it gets and I'm grateful.
